SUN Welcomes Iceland’s Efling as a New Member Union

SUN, the Nordic Service and Trade Union (Service- och tjänstebranschens Union i Norden), has welcomed a new member country into its organization with the recent inclusion of Iceland’s Efling union. The decision to admit Efling as a member was made at the recent board meeting, held in Reykjavik from October 21-22, 2024.

This historic expansion means SUN now represents members from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Faroe Islands, Finland, and Iceland.

SUN’s Chairman, John Nielsen from the Danish Serviceforbundet, expressed his excitement over Efling joining the organization. “It’s a proud moment for us to welcome a new country into SUN,” said Nielsen. “With Iceland now represented, we are strengthening the collaborative benefits among the Nordic countries.”

SUN is a regional union representing four sectors: property services, cleaning, security, and safety. Its primary mission is to promote solidarity among the member unions and across sectors in each country. SUN’s focus includes both the professional development and labor conditions of workers in the service and trade industries across the Nordic region. The addition of Efling, which is one of Iceland’s most prominent labor unions, will significantly bolster the cooperative potential of SUN’s 100,000 members.

Efling’s membership in SUN represents an important step in expanding the union’s Nordic solidarity and influence, with Iceland bringing new perspectives to SUN’s ongoing efforts to improve working conditions across its member nations.
